KNF Reports: Fewer Indictments but More Convictions in 2024

Sharp Drop in Indictments

Last year, I wrote that one in three reports from the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) ended with an indictment.

The new data for 2024 shows a big drop: the rate fell from 34% to 15%.

The number of reports stayed high (120 compared to 142 in 2023).

More Convictions Than Before

At the same time, courts issued more convictions and conditional discontinuances than in recent years: 42 in 2024 (compared to 20 in 2021, 30 in 2022 and 38 in 2023).

These Cases Move Slowly

Business crime cases are complex and take a long time.

From the moment KNF files a report to the point where prosecutors decide to press charges, years can pass.

This means that the results of reports filed in 2023–2024 may only show up in court data in the coming years. The current drop may be just part of the cycle, not a lasting change.

Fewer Names on the Warning List

Another interesting fact: in 2024, the KNF added 65 entities to its Public Warnings List– almost half as many as in 2023 (120).
